Wavefront eye surgery has been proved to restore vision better than standard laser procedures and glasses. Statistics show that 99% of treated patients have achieved standard driving vision; 89% of them enjoy 20:20 vision without glasses and the vision has considerably improved in 35% of them, compared to the pre-treatment period while they were wearing glasses. This procedure is available to LASIK and Epi-LASEK patients alike.
What is Wavefront?
Custom LASIK or Custom Wavefront LASIK, as it is often called, Wavefront treatment uses a procedure specially tailored to the optics of the patient’s eye. This is very important in achieving good results for patients whose eyes are not standard. Prior to treatment, patients will have their eyes measured for optical performance, to asses the quality of their vision. Since standard shape lenses fit the average population, the laser is used to improve the individual characteristics for each eye; thus, Wavefront will bring about better results than wearing glasses or contact lenses ever will.
After the optical performance of the eyes is measured in different spots of the cornea, this laser treatment will be used to optimize each part of the corneal surface. Those whose pupils are large and have a poor night vision will benefit from a considerable decrease in night time halos and glare. Half of the patients have acquired sharper vision from the Wavefront laser eye treatment.
Wavefront Specialists
Specialists in Wavefront treatment use a most advanced diagnostic machine – Nidek Optical Path Difference. It is the best technology in the field and can measure the progress of 8,000 waves of light passing through the eye. When these lights are reflected back, the machine will analyse the differences in the wave paths compared to perfect sight. The laser will be programmed to correct each corneal surface, making it as distortion-free as possible, thus greatly improving the patient’s sight.
The machine locks onto the eye and digitally maps tiny corneal sections, instructing the laser towards repairing the damaged areas. Using the fastest laser tracker, specialists can video the image of the iris 200 times/second and match it to the data that the Nidek OPD has given. Even if you move your eye during the treatment, the laser will be able to follow it precisely. During this treatment less tissue is removed which will maintain the structural strength of the eye and improve long term safety.
There are two types of Wavefront treatment available for patients: Optimised Wavefront and Customised Wavefront. Optimised Wavefront is used for patients whose corneal surfaces are normal but whose eye shape is not round enough for perfect focussing. Customised Wavefront is for patients with undulations on the corneal surface of the eye that need to be removed individually.
