Epi-LASEK Eye Surgery

Epi-LASEK is a popular procedure that involves lasering the cornea surface under the epithelium. It is a combination of two procedures – surface PRK and Epiflap. According to your individual prescription, the cornea will be lasered without the need of any additional surgery to the eye.

The Epi-Lasek Procedure

Epi-LASEK laser eye surgery is performed in safe sterile conditions. Anaesthetic eye drops will be applied to eliminate pain and a small clip device will be used to keep the eyelid open. In order to soften the epithelium and prepare it to be folded aside, alcohol will be used. The patient will then have to stare at the target light and the laser will be applied to the cornea for 30 seconds. If additional astigmatic correction is needed, it will take place after a short break; this will only take about 15 more seconds. Later, the epithelium will be pushed back into place.

The whole treatment will not take more than 15 minutes so it is quite a simple procedure.

If you are preparing to have both eyes treated on the same day, you are advised to bring a relative or friend to accompany you home after the operation. The necessary medication will be provided to you in the form of eye drops to apply during the following days, while the surface of the eye is healing. Much clearer vision will return in the next few days gradually. You may also be prescribed sleeping pills to ensure a good night’s sleep.

Post-Treatment

After lasering, the surgeon will place bandage lenses on your eyes. They will enable a clearer vision after the procedure and will also reduce pain to the minimum. These lenses will be carefully removed by a specialist three to five days later; otherwise they might cause damage to the newly formed epithelium.

Possible Side Effects

The most common side effect that has been noticed after this procedure is poor night vision. However, any side effects will gradually disappear during the healing process. It is advisable that you should stay away from the wheel for the next two weeks after treatment.
